The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General.  The position filled through this announcement will serve in Post-Conviction Litigation of the Criminal Justice Division.

 

Job Title: Assistant Attorney General

 

Job Summary:
Duties of an attorney in this section include, but are not limited to: preparing briefs on behalf of the State in all murder cases, with sentences of life or life without parole, in the Georgia Supreme Court and defending habeas corpus cases, in both state and federal courts, where their convictions and sentences range from life without parole to misdemeanors. Some travel is required in this position.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Handles appeals:     Prepares briefs on behalf of the State in murder direct appeals and in habeas corpus cases in state and federal courts.
  2. Litigates cases:
    • Participates in evidentiary hearings and appears in state and federal habeas cases to argue motions and appeals;
    • Prepares final orders in state habeas corpus cases;
    • Researches and prepares pleadings, motions and briefs;
    • Works with expert witnesses on occasion.
  3. Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legislation
    Travel, as required, for in-person evidentiary hearings (typically not much travel is required due to hearings being conducted virtually). Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Graduation from an accredited law school and Member of the Georgia Bar in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more items below:

Strong writing and research skills.

Experience in appellate litigation.

Additional Information:

A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation.  Candidates that are being strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application & waiver, Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter and copies of official college transcripts.
