OVERVIEW

DBHDD operates state hospitals and provides for community-based services across the state through contracted providers. The department serves people living with mental health challenges, substance use disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, or any combination of these. As Georgia’s public safety net, our primary responsibility is to serve people who are uninsured. We also serve individuals on Medicaid and others with few resources or options.

Due to retirements, Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is seeking a Dentist for our clinic in Thomasville, Georgia.  

 

DBHDD is the state agency that focuses solely on policies, programs, and services for people with severe persistent mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental and intellectual disabilities. 

 

We have nearly 5,000 employees whose work is structured in five divisions: Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities, Hospital Services, Accountability & Compliance, and Performance Management & Quality Improvement.

 

DBHDD operates six field offices and five hospitals throughout the state of Georgia, offering various services based on the populations they serve and the capacity of community providers. These hospitals provide a spectrum of care from 23-hour observation through residential services.

 

Our Dental Clinics serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a multiple county catchment area around the clinic.  

 

Job Responsibilities

  

  • Diagnose, treats, prevent and control disorders of the teeth and mouth including gums and related oral structures.
  • May treat diseases of nerve, pulp, and other dental tissues affecting vitality of teeth.
  • Advises and instructs patients regarding preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems, and oral health care services.
  • Designs, makes, and fits prosthodontic appliances such as space maintainers, bridges, partials, and dentures, or write fabrication instructions or prescriptions for denturists and dental technicians.
  • Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth, gums and related oral structures, and provide preventive and corrective services.
  • Examines teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, and other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments.
  • Fills pulp chamber and canal with endodontic materials.
  • Formulates plan of treatment for patient's teeth and mouth tissue.
  • Supervises and plans workload of support staff.
  • Uses air turbine and hand instruments, dental appliances and surgical implements.
  • Uses masks, gloves and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.
  • Writes prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications


Benefits 

Vacation: 15 days each year up to 5 years of service; 18 days each year from 5-10 years of service; 21 days each year for 10 + years of service

Sick Leave – accrual at a rate of 10 hours per month (15 days each year)

Holidays – the state of Georgia recognizes 12 paid holidays

Doctorate or professional degree in dentistry from an accredited college or university AND One year of experience AND current Georgia license to practice dentistry.
