This job is a full time, benefited, FLSA non-exempt position in the Technology & Operations that reports to the Grounds Manager.

 

Salary: Targeted salary is commensurate with education and experience not to exceed the budgeted amount of $39,500.00 per year.

 

Scheduled Hours:

Day Position: Monday- Friday (Occasional Saturdays)

Hours: 5:30AM- 2:30PM

 

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience, which would have enabled the applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

In addition to the minimum qualifications, Associate Degree or Diploma in Horticulture.  Ability to follow both written and oral instruction quickly and accurately.  1-2 years’ experience in a production landscape maintenance/installation environment. Experience with troubleshooting, repairing, and installing irrigation systems. Experience with troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining landscape maintenance equipment. Ability to use word processing, email, spreadsheets and internet resources to enhance communication, recordkeeping and research.  1-2 years’ experience in a progressively responsible role in a production landscape maintenance/installation environment. 

 

Job Description Summary:

Under general supervision, maintains the campus grounds in an attractive and orderly condition by mowing the turf around campus, removing leaves and debris, planting seasonal color and performing other related tasks. Adjusts and services grounds equipment as required. May supervise work-study students and unskilled landscape labor. May require response to campus outside normal working hours, which include responding to emergencies. If offered a position, employees in this department must complete the Hazardous Materials Training as well as the Bloodborne & Airborne Pathogen training annually and complete Pre-employment Drug Screen.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Percentage of Time:

Operates commercial, tilling and trimming equipment to cut grass, edge walks, flowerbeds, curbs, etc. in accordance with the schedule provided by supervisor. 

·       Works in accordance with the maintenance schedule as provided by the grounds supervisor in the area designated by the current schedule.

·       Operates equipment responsibly and in manner intended while observing conditions.

·       Observes safety rules while operating equipment (i.e., directions of discharge, transport and mowing speeds, yielding to motorized and pedestrian traffic).  Wears protective equipment.

·       Informs supervisor and mechanic of equipment problems.

·       Cleans and disposes of all refuse in assigned areas.

·       Disposes of debris and leaves according to established guidelines.

·       Ensure storm drains and traps remain clear of debris.

Operates heavy, mechanized equipment, such as trucks, tractors, and backhoes for trenching, landscaping, grading, digging, loading, etc.

·       Operates equipment in accordance with strict safety guidelines.

·       Ensures equipment is stored in appropriate and safe location.

·       Reports any equipment problems to supervisor.

Applies insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers for management programs as directed and by adhering to necessary safety precautions.

·       Mixes and applies chemicals in direct accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines.

·       Wears protective clothing/equipment at all times as required by established safety regulations.

·       Informs all appropriate personnel of presence of any dangerous chemicals when applying all chemicals.

·       Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of insecticides along with other chemicals and proper usage.

·       Prepares programs to administer proper various chemicals and aeration of turf throughout the year for high quality results.

·       Monitors and programs irrigation systems based on the active growing season needs.

Maintains required records of time spent each day by task category. Performs related support functions as requested.

 

·       Submits clear and legible information for each day of work performed

·       Submits required records within prescribed periods.

Cleans and maintains shop, tools, and all related equipment.

·       Performs routine cleaning of facility/shop to ensure adequate operation at all times.

·       Obtains proper supplies and tools needed for each task and promptly returns unused supplies and tools to appropriate storage areas.

·       Follows appropriate safety procedures including posting signage and setting barricades as needed.

·       Uses chemicals according to manufacturer's specifications and departmental policies.

·       Maintains a safe and effective work/storage area at all times.

·       Returns all tools and materials to appropriate storage area by end of working day.

·       Ensures all equipment, materials are maintained in a safe and clean manner.

·       Selects appropriate tools and equipment for projects at beginning of each workday.

·       Informs supervisor of any problems with tools or equipment.

Maintains equipment fluids, performs routine equipment maintenance, troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment problems and makes necessary repairs.

·       Monitors equipment on a regular basis to ensure that correct fluid levels and tire pressures maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications.

·       Performs routine fluid changes and other maintenance on a regular basis according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

·       Diagnoses problems and repairs equipment in a timely manner.

·       Maintains an inventory of repair parts and reorders necessary parts when needed.

·       Keeps records of repairs made and maintenance performed on designated equipment.

Designs and installs new landscape plantings, hardscape and maintain irrigation system

·       Using knowledge of both the design process and plant material produces an industry standard landscape plan and view design for proposed new landscape areas.

·       Utilize the design project’s budgeted costs for the proposed landscape.

·       Orders the necessary landscape elements, schedules the installation of the landscape in accordance with the overall campus maintenance schedule and within budget limitations.

·       Install irrigation systems and components according to industry standards

·       Monitor and maintain elements of the installed irrigation systems to ensure good working conditions, making repairs as necessary
