Savannah
Technical College seeks a part-time, Biology and Chemistry Laboratory
Technician to assist with preparation of Biology and Chemistry courses at the Savannah
Campus. This individual will report to the supervisor of the Biology and
Chemistry labs in the General Studies Division.
The Professional Science Laboratory Technician will be responsible for
the following duties (the list is not intended to be exhaustive):
Assists
instructors in setting up experiments and equipment for chemistry, and biology
lab classes
Ensuring
safe work and learning environment by complying with OSHA regulations for
handling hazardous materials, and follows waste regulations and proper
procedures in the disposal of chemicals
Properly
sterilizing equipment and cleans glassware using the appropriate solvents and
equipment (autoclave)
Maintaining
a set of solutions for specific lab activities
Overseeing
the inventory of lab equipment and supplies and maintaining the inventory
spreadsheet
Making
media and inoculating media for the microbiology courses
Preparing,
setting up and taking down lab exam stations
Responsible
for setting up, adjusting, calibrating, cleaning, maintaining, repairing and
troubleshooting laboratory equipment
Responsible
for preparing the lab for a new semester such as, refilling student supply
drawers, cleaning lab coats, etc.
Keeping
the labs clean and organized
Maintaining
MSDS notebooks
Preparing
chemical solutions and compounds
Troubleshooting
experimentation using techniques, such as microscopy and chromatography
Maintaining
the acids/bases, flammable/corrosives cabinet and fume hoods
Administrative
duties: following up on supply purchases, work orders, making copies of
worksheets or other materials needed for specific labs, receives/confirms
shipments
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates
working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry with 12 credit
hours in Biology and/or Chemistry
Ability
to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated
organizational skills
Demonstrated
skills in usage of Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability
to work day and/or evening hours.
Typical work schedule is Monday-Thursday.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer candidates who possess a Bachelor’s degree in
Biology or Chemistry or
worked in a science lab at least one year.
Experience working in a Microbiology laboratory.
Physical Demands
Responsibilities are typically performed in a lab environment with the employee
intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling for up
to three (3) – four (4) continuous hours at a time. The employee frequently lifts lightweight
objects up to 25LBS. The exposure to
dirt, dust, chemicals, fumes, and hazardous materials is possible in the
laboratory environment. The ability to
distinguish colors and finger dexterity is required.
Salary/Benefits Salary
is commensurate with education and work experience.
