Deputy Solicitor General: Assistant Solicitor General: Honors Fellow

The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General.  The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division.  The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Solcitor General Section.

  

The Solicitor General for the State of Georgia is now hiring for the positions of Deputy Solicitor General, Assistant Solicitor General, and Honors Fellow.  As the chief appellate litigator for the State of Georgia, the Solicitor General oversees the state’s appellate litigation, with particular focus on the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.  All three positions involve significant litigation responsibility, including managing cases, drafting briefs, and presenting oral argument.  Lawyers interested in constitutional litigation, appellate practice, and public service are encouraged to apply.

The Office of the Solicitor General directly handles cases of exceptional complexity and public importance.  The Office also supervises the State’s amicus practice, regularly filing multistate amicus briefs in the Supreme Court and the federal courts of appeals.  And the Office oversees high-stakes trial litigation and advises the Attorney General on legal issues.

Opportunities & Responsibilities

The Deputy, Assistant, and Honors Fellow participate in all aspects of the Office’s work.  Responsibilities increase based on experience, but all successful applicants can expect to:

·      Draft and file briefs in the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, the Eleventh Circuit, and other courts.

·      Present oral argument in various appellate courts.

·      Prepare amicus briefs on behalf of multistate amicus coalitions.

·      Review draft appellate briefs prepared by attorneys in other units of the Attorney General’s office and participate in moots to prepare attorneys for argument.

·      Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda for the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, and other senior staff.

Preferred Qualifications (Deputy Solicitor General):

·      Four or more years of litigation experience, with significant appellate experience

·      Experience managing complex litigation teams

·      Judicial clerkship

Preferred Qualifications (Assistant Solicitor General):

·      Two to three years of litigation experience

·      Judicial clerkship

Solicitor General Honors Fellowship:

The Honors Fellowship offers talented new attorneys the opportunity to gain substantive experience unparalleled in private practice.  Fellows participate in all aspects of the Office’s work, including briefing and arguing cases.  The Fellowship is open to all recent law school graduates; preference will be given to those with judicial clerkship experience.  Fellows serve for one or two years, based on the Fellow’s availability and the Office’s hiring needs.

Minimum Qualifications for all positions: 

·      Demonstrated aptitude for legal analysis, brief writing, and oral communication

·      Law degree from accredited law school

·      Admitted to Georgia bar (or willing to pursue)
