Assistant Attorney General - Education, Elections, Local Government and Judiciary

The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General.  The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division.  The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Education, Elections, Government Services, and Judiciary section of our Government Services & Employment Division.

Job Summary

Attorneys in this section provide advice and representation to the University System of Georgia, the Technical College System of Georgia, the Department of Education, the Professional Standards Commission, the Secretary of State’s Election Division, the State Election Board, the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission, the Public Defenders Council, the Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission, the Office of Bar Admissions, and the State Charter Schools Commission.  The section also houses the Attorney General’s Open Government Mediation program.  Attorneys in the section also provide representation to the state’s judicial branch in non-monetary actions brought against appellate or superior court judges.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Litigates cases:
    1. Participates in hearings and appears in state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals;
    2. Researches and prepares pleadings, motions and briefs;
    3. Attends depositions; interviews witnesses and hires expert witnesses;
    4. Participates in settlement negotiations;
    5. Prepares pleadings and discovery responses;
  2. Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies; drafts memoranda of advice;
  3. Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments;
  4. Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions;
  5. Attends client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required;
  6. Provides training as needed to clients, the bar, and the public on matters falling within the section’s area of practice
  7. Travel as required by the position;
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited law school and Member of the Georgia Bar

 

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more items below:

·         Experience in drafting and arguing dispositive motions in state and federal courts

·         Experience in drafting appellate briefs

·         Experience in federal civil rights litigation

·         A working knowledge of federal election law

·         Experience litigating in administrative hearings

 

Additional Information:

A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation.  Candidates that are being strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application & waiver, Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter and copies of official college transcripts.
