Georgia Capital Defender (Atlanta) – Mitigation Investigator II


The Georgia Public Defender Council has an opening for a full-time Mitigation Investigator II (Atlanta, GA), representing indigent defendants at the pre-trial and trial level. The Mitigation Investigator works with attorneys as part of a client team and is primarily responsible for conducting comprehensive fact-based investigations to develop and prepare a comprehensive mitigation packet for the attorneys. The Mitigation Investigator identifies, locates, and interviews a variety of witnesses; identifies, collects, and reviews a vast array of records; identifies and analyzes issues in the case; prepares independent reports concerning the life history of the client, and assists attorneys in identifying appropriate expert witnesses, and preparing evidence and witnesses to present to an attorney, a judge, or to a jury. The Mitigation Investigator must be able to organize and prioritize workload to manage cases efficiently; adjust to workload changes; work within a team and under stress to meet deadlines.

Job Description and Requirements: A master’s degree in social work, psychology or a related field is preferred. Experience in criminal litigation, and knowledge of social history and mental health issues is a plus. Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel extensively throughout Georgia and out of state. Salary comes with full State of Georgia benefits, including health insurance and State pension. Spanish-speaking also a plus.

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND One year of related experience OR Three years of experience in law enforcement or related field OR One year of experience required at the lower level Criminal Investigator 1 (PSP090) or position equivalent AND P.O.S.T. certification. Note: Some positions may require incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license.
