Savannah Technical College is seeking a 12-month, full time Health Science Core Department Head/ Instructor to perform instructional duties and supervise all aspects of the Health Science Core curriculum. The position will provide theory and practical instruction to a level sufficient for students to develop the skills necessary to progress into a post-secondary Health Science program or become employed in their chose Health Science profession. This role also requires the supervision of students during patient care. Responsibilities are based at the Liberty Campus, but will require travel to any Savannah Technical College Campus location.  

 

Characteristic duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:  

•    Under general supervision, demonstrates the use of appropriate teaching techniques.
•    Demonstrates the use of appropriate testing and grading procedures, including proper maintenance of grade books           and any other appropriate record-keeping required.
•    Demonstrates the effective use of oral and written communication skills.
•    Demonstrates knowledge of current procedures in Health Care fields.
•    Follows approved course syllabus.
•    Monitors students’ use of supplies, materials, and equipment;
•    Develop, manage, and teach classes, delivering instruction both individually and as a member of a team;
•    Prepares lesson plans for classroom instruction for Health Science Core occupational courses;
•    Develop and coordinate curriculum; conduct assessments of all courses taught in the department as requested;
•    Evaluate effectiveness of courses through student data, graduate surveys, and employer surveys;
•    Develop yearly department budget;
•    Complete reports and requests for information from internal and external departments and agencies;
•    Lead and coordinate Health Sciences advisory committee for the department;
•    Participate in College committees and meetings;
•    Collaborate with colleagues on common curriculum areas;
•    Instruct students, develop program syllabi, goals, and objectives;
•    Facilitate student activities for Health Sciences club;
•    Assists with student recruitment, retention, and job placement efforts;
•    Manage department faculty teaching schedules;
•    Order and maintain equipment and supplies;
•    Advise and register health sciences students;
•    Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending staff development training,                     workshops, seminars and conferences;
•    Follows policies and procedures of Savannah Technical College, to include standards for student-faculty professional           relationships/interaction;
•    Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

•    Must possess a minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Degree must be from a private or public postsecondary         institution accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the           U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or both.
•    Current, unencumbered Georgia RN License in good standing.
•   Three years occupational experience in the field of the program being taught, of which at least one year shall be within         the last five years; (One year of related occupational experience may be waived with at least two years of                             post−secondary teaching experience in the appropriate occupational field within the last five years.), or
•    An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable knowledge may be acquired.
•    Must be flexible to teach day or evening classes.
•    Must possess current AHA Instructor certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid.
•    Must possess valid driver’s license and required insurability.
•    Must possess skill in oral and written communication.
•    Must possess basic computer skills to include, but not limited to, word; excel; power point; and email.
•    Must possess excellent organizational and customer service skills to interact professionally with Savannah Tech                   employees, students, and visitors. 

Preferred Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s Degree in a Health Care related field from an accredited institution.
•    Georgia Train-the Trainer certification for Nurse Aide
•    Experience with phlebotomy procedures
•    Experienced in the development, administration, and evaluation of academic programs, to include curriculum                       development, instructional methodology, planning, evaluation, budgeting, supervision, and management. 

Physical Demands

Teaching responsibilities are typically performed in a classroom/lab environment with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling for three (3) – four (4) continuous hours at a time.  The employee frequently lifts/carries objects that weigh 10lbs. or less.  Clinical responsibilities are typically performed in a hospital, long term care facility, or other medical facilities and require that the employee stand or walk for seven (7) – eight (8) hours: bend, twist, push and/or pull for three (3) – four (4) hours; and occasionally lift 50lbs. to 75lbs. per rotation. The exposure to infectious diseases, gas, or fumes is possible during clinical rotations.

Salary is commensurate with education and work experience.  Benefits include paid state holidays, annual and sick leave, and the State of Georgia Benefits package.
