Summary of Responsibilities:

The Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia (PAC) is inviting applications from current or former law enforcement officers for a grant-funded position as an in-house Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and member of PAC’s Traffic Safety Team. The DRE will report to the Director of Training and will work closely with our Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutors and training staff. The DRE will provide training, education and technical support to prosecutors and law enforcement agencies throughout Georgia on traffic crimes and safety issues including: alcohol and/or drug-impaired driving, vehicular homicide, occupant restraint and other highway safety issues. Development of the DRE Program at PAC also includes:

·         Responding to requests for technical assistance by Georgia's prosecuting attorneys. The DRE may travel to a prosecutor's office to assist with trial preparation and/or trials involving unique or complicated impaired driving or fatal crash cases. The DRE may also be asked to testify as an expert witness on matters within the scope of their training and experience.

·         Planning, teaching, facilitating, and developing curriculum for multi-day conferences such as Protecting Lives, Saving Futures, Lethal Weapon /Crash Reconstruction, Prosecuting the Drugged Driver, Basic DUI Prosecution and more.

·         Teaching at joint prosecutor and law enforcement training sessions across the state. Please note these trainings may require travel several times during the month and can include overnight travel. The topics covered in these trainings are generally: Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Report Writing, Drugged Driving, and the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program. Again, significant travel will be required.

·         Conducting telephone, e-mail or in-person consultations on any traffic cases with prosecutors and law enforcement officers in Georgia. The DRE will also be available to travel to any jurisdiction throughout Georgia to provide on-site consultations to prosecutors on pending impaired driving fatality or serious bodily injury cases to assist them in preparing for trial.

·         Building awareness and market the DRE Program by utilizing PAC trainings, traffic safety network meetings, prosecutor and law enforcement listservs, the PAC website and Facebook page, and other means to increase awareness of the DRE Program with the goal of identifying qualified candidates for DRE training and increasing participation and use of the DRE Program.

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Minimum of ten years’ experience in law enforcement and five years’ experience as an instructor with an emphasis on traffic enforcement.

·         Prior experience as an instructor conducting DRE or DUI / SFST training.

·         POST Certification in good standing.

·         Current certification as a Georgia POST Instructor.

·         Participate in yearly training and evaluations to maintain certification as a peace officer, DRE, and instructor.

·         Certification as a DRE Instructor and DUI / SFST Instructor.
