Job Description:

Atlanta Technical College (ATC) is seeking highly qualified applicants for its Academic Support Specialist (Part-Time) position in the Academic & Student Affairs division. This position is located at Atlanta Tech's campus just south of Downtown Atlanta.    


Under the direct supervision of the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Academic Support Specialist (Part-Time) provides comprehensive academic support to students enrolled in General Education coursework within the Division of Arts & Sciences. The position is designed to strengthen student persistence, course completion, and academic achievement through proactive, student-centered interventions. Working collaboratively with faculty, advisors, academic leadership, and student-support personnel, the Academic Support Specialist provides embedded classroom support, individualized academic coaching, supplemental instruction, tutoring, student outreach, and academic skill development. The Specialist will focus particularly on gateway and high-impact courses in English and Mathematics where students may experience academic barriers.

 

Duties and responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Provide individual and small-group academic tutoring and supplemental instruction.
  • Deliver embedded/push-in support within assigned courses in collaboration with faculty.
  • Identify students who may be at risk of unsuccessful course completion and provide timely academic interventions.
  • Develop individualized strategies to address identified academic deficiencies.
  • Conduct workshops, seminars, study sessions, and other academic-success activities.
  • Collaborate with faculty to reinforce course competencies and strengthen student learning.
  • Establish productive working relationships with faculty, advisors, department chairs, and student-support personnel.
  • Assist students in developing effective study habits, time-management skills, test-taking strategies, and academic self-advocacy.
  • Support students across multiple instructional modalities, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid environments.
  • Maintain appropriate records of student contacts, interventions, referrals, and outcomes.
  • Use student-success and course-performance data to identify trends, target interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of support services.
  • Participate in retention, persistence, completion, and student-success initiatives sponsored by the College.
  • Refer students to appropriate academic, financial, advising, counseling, and other institutional resources when additional support is warranted.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable College policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Participate in professional development and departmental meetings. and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Oral and written communication skills


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess and demonstrate a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university AND two (2) years of directly related work experience.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference may be given to candidates who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess and demonstrate the following:


  • Master's degree in English, Mathematics, Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated experience providing academic support, tutoring, supplemental instruction, student success coaching, or related services in a higher education environment.
  • Experience working with community college, technical college, first-generation, adult, returning, or academically underprepared students.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students in gateway English and/or Mathematics courses.
  • Experience with embedded tutoring, push-in academic support, early-alert interventions, or other proactive student-success models.
  • Demonstrated ability to use student achievement data to identify academic needs and inform interventions.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty to support student learning and course success.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish trusting relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Commitment to culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable academic support practices.
  • Experience developing academic workshops, instructional materials, or student-success programming.

 

 

Note: Experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis
