Job Summary
The Georgia Department of Education, Finance and Business Operations Division, is recruiting for an Accountant IV in the Financial Review Unit. Under general supervision and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), the selected candidate will perform professional accounting duties, including preparing financial statements and accounting reports, assisting finance personnel of local school systems, and providing information to auditors and other internal and external stakeholders.
Job Duties
- Research and document accounting procedures and policies that integrate GAAP, Government Auditing Standards, statutory accounting requirements, and fiscal requirements applicable to local education agencies.
- Review audit reports and follow up on corrective action plans to ensure audits are reviewed and closed within applicable state and federal regulatory timelines.
- Identify opportunities to improve methods for recording, maintaining, and reporting the financial and budgetary data of local education agencies.
- Assist with transparency reporting for local education agency data.
- Provide varying levels of technical assistance to finance officers of local education agencies, including on-site assistance when required.
- Provide training to local education agencies on accounting, state and federal compliance processes, and financial fiscal closeout procedures.
- Assist the Accounting Manager with federal reporting requirements, including providing professional guidance on complex accounting and financial issues affecting local education agencies, supporting the accounting of consolidated funds, conducting ad hoc research and analysis for management, and analyzing key federal reporting data.
- Prepare specialized and standard accounting reports and provide information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in preparing training materials and guidance documents for local education agencies related to the preparation of annual financial statements.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and possess one or more of the following:
- Experience preparing financial statements.
- Experience with K-12 or local school system accounting.
- Experience in governmental accounting and auditing.
- Experience using the PCGenesis school district accounting software.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint), with an emphasis on Excel.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university and two years of professional accounting experience; or bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university and three years of professional accounting experience; or bachelor's degree in a business curriculum that included completion of introductory and intermediate accounting sequences from an accredited college or university and four years of professional accounting experience. Note: Some positions may require certifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
