The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government, and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Regulated Public Interests section of our Regulated Industries and Professions Division. Job Title: Assistant Attorney General - Regulated Industries & Professions - Regulated Public Interest
Job Summary:
Attorneys in this Section provide legal advice and representation to the Office of Health Planning of the Department of Community Health, the Georgia Public Service Commission, the Access to Medical Cannabis Commission, and the Insurance Commissioner. For the Office of Health Planning (Certificate of Need matters) and the Public Service Commission (regulation of utilities), attorneys represent the divisions of the agency before hearing officers and agency heads, and then defend the final agency decision on appeal. For the Access to Medical Cannabis Commission, attorneys advise the client on the implementation of the Hope Act and the general regulation of the production, manufacture, and dispensing of medical cannabis in the state. While this Section represents the Insurance Commissioner’s office in contested cases and rulemakings, the bulk of the work relates to the liquidation of insolvent insurance companies, which can involve bringing claims against parties that contributed to the insolvency of an insurance company as well as defending the Insurance Commissioner against claims the liquidation was mishandled. In addition to these areas, the Section also represents the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity (fair housing and employment), the State Board of Workers’ Compensation, the Commission on Women, and the Georgia Trauma Care Network Commission. Finally, the Section represents the State in Class Action Fairness Act and False Claims Act matters.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
1) Participates in administrative hearings and appears in state and federal trial and appellate courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals.
2) Researches and prepares pleadings, motions and briefs.
3) Defends agency decisions on appeal.
4) Participates in mediations and settlement negotiations.
5) Prepares discovery requests and responses.
6) Provides legal advice to client agencies memorialized in a letter or memorandum.
7) Conducts research on pertinent legal issues and keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
8) Participates in multistate working groups.
9) Reviews sign-on opportunities for letters, comments, and briefs.
10) Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions.
11) Responds to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
12) Attends client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required.
13) Travel, as required by the position (typically travel is minimal in this position).
14) Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited law school and Member of the Georgia Bar
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more items below:
· At least 2 years’ experience
· Litigation experience
