The Western Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office is seeking qualified and dedicated applicants for the position of Assistant Public Defender 2, serving Clarke and Oconee Counties. This role offers an opportunity to serve the community by providing high-quality legal representation to indigent clients. Applicants must meet the qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities for the position. The primary responsibilities include assisting and/or handling felony caseloads. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to public service and client-centered representation. Candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and a license to practice law in the State of Georgia. In addition, the chosen applicant will be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
While the State has established an authorized salary range for this position, it is county funded. The starting salary will be based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender 2 provides dedicated and effective legal representation to indigent clients, primarily handling felony and other criminal cases in Superior Court. This position performs beginning to mid-level professional legal work, managing an independent caseload while assisting with complex, high profile, and serious criminal cases as needed. The Assistant Public Defender 2 is responsible for advocating zealously on behalf of clients at all stages of criminal proceedings, conducting legal research, drafting motions and pleadings, negotiating with prosecutors, and representing clients in court appearances, hearings, and trials. Successful candidates must possess strong courtroom advocacy, legal writing, and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage a demanding caseload in a fast-paced environment. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring OR reciprocity AND One year of relevant legal -experience OR One year of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 1 (LEP020)Equal Employment Opportunity Employer
