Job Description:

The Georgia Public Defender Council, seeking an Assistant Public Defender 3 or 4 for the Specialized Division. Qualified candidates must possess the skills and experience necessary to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. Candidates must be current members in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia. The candidate will be assigned cases in the western part of Georgia including the West Georgia, Coweta, Tallapoosa, and Paulding Judicial Circuits. The employee selected will primarily work from home but will have access to office space and administrative assistance. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Public Defender 3 and 4 provides competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients. This position involves performing professional legal work, including handling cases of routine to moderate complexity. The Assistant Public Defender will be assigned to serious, high-profile, and significant felony cases, as well as represent clients in cases including the most serious, complex legal cases assigned to the office, requiring advanced legal knowledge and strong advocacy skills. Performs other related duties as required. Serves at the pleasure of the Executive Director.

 

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia

OR

• Eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination

OR

• Reciprocity AND Two years of relevant legal experience

OR

• Two years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021) or    

  Three years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022)

 

 AGENCY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Possesses three years of experience in criminal defense.

• Demonstrates the knowledge to conduct case research and documentation.

• Knowledge of statutes, court decisions, federal and state laws, and local criminal laws.

• Demonstrates the knowledge to investigate and prepare cases for hearings and trials.

• Ability to plan the work of assigned staff.

• Makes sound and well-informed decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.

• Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication.

• Displays a high level of commitment toward work and a high standard of ethical conduct.

• Effectively manages own time and that of others with a high level of initiative in accomplishing tasks and meeting deadlines.

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications and any other qualifications specific to the job responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and two (2) years of relevant legal -experience; or two (2) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021).
