At Team Georgia Careers, we recognize the dedication and contributions of active-duty service members and veterans every day. Military service builds valuable skills and experience that can translate into meaningful careers in Georgia state government.

Through the state's veterans' preference policy, certain eligible veterans may receive special hiring consideration when applying for state government jobs. Be sure to identify your veteran status when applying and provide the required documentation to receive any preference for which you qualify.

Make an impact with your experience

Veterans bring valuable skills in communication, attention to detail, teamwork, integrity and public service. These strengths can help veterans continue making a difference in communities across Georgia through a variety of state government careers.

  • Public safety and law enforcement: Veterans can apply their leadership, discipline and risk assessment skills in positions such as state trooper, criminal investigator or correctional officer.
  • Cybersecurity and IT: Technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities and information security skills can translate into careers as cybersecurity analysts, IT support specialists or network administrators.
  • Procurement and purchasing: Experience in logistics, resource management and supply chain coordination can support careers as procurement officers, purchasing agents or contract specialists.
  • Finance and accounting: Attention to detail, accountability and financial management skills can prepare veterans for positions such as accountants, auditors or financial operations specialists.
  • Social and human services: Communication, teamwork and crisis management skills can help veterans support Georgia communities as social workers, economic support specialists or social services program consultants.

As you explore your next career opportunity, understanding veterans' preference can help you make the most of the hiring consideration available to eligible applicants.

Understanding veterans' preference

What is veterans' preference?

Veterans' preference provides special hiring consideration to eligible veterans seeking employment with the State of Georgia.

How does it work?

Eligible veterans may receive an additional 5 or 10 points on a passing score from a numerically scored written entrance examination, depending on their eligibility.

When an agency does not use this type of examination, preference is given to eligible veterans whose qualifications are equivalent to those of the most suitable non-veteran applicant.

How do I claim veterans' preference?

Identify your veteran status during the application process and submit copies of the required supporting documentation to the hiring agency's human resources department listed on the job posting.

Self-identification alone does not establish eligibility or grant veterans' preference. The required documentation must be received before preference can be granted.

Where can I learn more?

For complete eligibility requirements and additional information, review State Personnel Board Rule 478-1-.18.

Your service matters. So does your next career move.

Your military experience can continue making an impact through a career with the State of Georgia. Explore opportunities with Team Georgia Careers, and remember to identify your veteran status and submit the required documentation when applying to receive any veterans' preference for which you qualify.
