Job Description:
Columbus Technical College is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to serve as a full-time Commercial Truck Driving (CDL) Instructor. This individual will be responsible for providing high-quality classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction to students preparing to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and enter the commercial transportation industry and create a safe, supportive, and student-centered learning environment while providing instruction in accordance with Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) curriculum standards, applicable federal and state regulations, and industry expectations. Instruction may be provided at the college, designated training facilities, or other locations within the college's delivery service area.
The successful candidate must demonstrate strong knowledge of commercial motor vehicle operations, applicable safety regulations, vehicle inspection procedures, defensive driving practices, and the skills necessary to prepare students for successful completion of CDL training and licensing requirements. The instructor will evaluate student progress toward course goals, objectives, and student learning outcomes while ensuring instruction aligns with industry standards and workforce needs. This position is full-time/exempt.
This position will require the following physical abilities:
Sit, stand, walk, bend, push, and pull for (3) to (4) continuous hours, or longer at times in various indoor and outdoor working conditions
Must be able to get underneath trucks and trailers to demonstrate part locations to students
Must be able to walk along beside the truck during range maneuvers.
Please note the following information regarding this position:
May require teaching on or off campus throughout our service delivery area (Muscogee County, Stewart County, Quitman County, Chattahoochee County, Harris County, and Talbot County)
May require travel
Will require teaching morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend classes
Responsibilities:
Provide effective classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction in Commercial Truck Driving/CDL operations
Teach students the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for safe operation of commercial motor vehicles
Provide instruction in vehicle inspection, basic vehicle systems, safe operating procedures, defensive driving, trip planning, cargo handling, and other applicable CDL competencies
Demonstrate and evaluate proper vehicle control, backing maneuvers, coupling and uncoupling procedures, turning, shifting, braking, lane positioning, and other required driving skills
Prepare students for successful completion of applicable CDL knowledge and skills testing
Develop and deliver instructional materials in accordance with TCSG curriculum standards, course outlines, program objectives, and applicable regulatory requirements
Provide instruction consistent with applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements and Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) CDL requirements
Evaluate student performance and progress toward course competencies, learning outcomes, and CDL training requirements
Provide timely and appropriate feedback to students regarding academic, technical, and driving performance
Maintain accurate attendance, student progress, grading, and instructional records in accordance with college and TCSG requirements
Maintain a safe and professional training environment during classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction
Conduct and/or assist with required pre-trip vehicle inspections and ensure students understand applicable vehicle safety requirements
Inspect training vehicles and equipment before and after use and immediately report mechanical, safety, or maintenance concerns
Ensure students follow established safety procedures and comply with college, program, vehicle, and training-site requirements
Supervise students closely during all range and behind-the-wheel activities
Maintain current knowledge of CDL regulations, commercial transportation practices, safety requirements, and industry standards
Advise and support students regarding academic, technical, career, and employment-related concerns
Assist with student recruitment, retention, completion, and job placement initiatives
Communicate effectively with program faculty, staff, administrators, industry partners, testing personnel, and other stakeholders
Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, orientation, training, and other college activities as required
Utilize general computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, email, learning management systems, and other instructional technology platforms
Demonstrate strong time management, organization, communication, observation, supervision, and evaluation skills
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution
Minimum of three (3) years of recent, verifiable commercial driving experience
Possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
**7-year Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) as supporting documentation of Georgia Class A CDL license will be required for those interviewed. **

Documented Driver/trainer experience
Post-secondary teaching experience
Distance education teaching/learning experience
