Job Title: Correctional Officer- Central State Hospital- Milledgeville
Work Location: Central State Hospital- Milledgeville, Ga.
Travel: less than 10%
Job Summary:
Under general supervision, assists with the administration of security operations within a state-operated behavioral health and forensic treatment facility. Maintains the safety and security of patients, staff, visitors, contractors, and state property through access control, patrol operations, incident response, and security monitoring activities. Conducts routine patrols of hospital grounds, parking areas, and DBHDD-owned facilities to identify and address safety, security, and operational concerns. Provides security screening and access control for individuals entering and exiting hospital properties, assists with the secure admission, transfer, and movement of forensic patients, and supports hospital operations through proactive security measures. Responds to emergencies, security incidents, disturbances, and other situations requiring intervention to maintain a safe and secure environment. May provide guidance and direction to subordinate staff as assigned and performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Conducts security patrols of hospital grounds, buildings, parking areas, and other DBHDD-owned properties.
• Monitors and controls access points to ensure the safety and security of patients, staff, visitors, contractors, and state assets.
• Screens visitors, vendors, contractors, and deliveries entering secured areas.
• Assists with the secure receipt, admission, transfer, discharge, and movement of forensic patients.
• Responds to alarms, emergencies, suspicious activity, disturbances, and other incidents affecting hospital operations.
• Assists with perimeter security, contraband prevention efforts, patient movement, and special security assignments.
• Completes incident reports, activity logs, and other required documentation.
• Maintains communication with hospital staff, security personnel, DBHDD Police personnel, and emergency responders.
• Assists the DBHDD Police Department during critical incidents, investigations, searches, emergency operations, and security-related events.
• May conduct preliminary inquiries into incidents occurring within the hospital or on DBHDD property, including gathering information, obtaining statements, reviewing video footage, and preparing reports in coordination with the DBHDD Police Department.
• Enforces facility rules, policies, procedures, and applicable security protocols.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of security, correctional, and institutional safety practices.
• Ability to patrol large facilities and grounds while maintaining vigilance and situational awareness.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff, law enforcement personnel, and the public.
• Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and crisis situations.
• Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports.
• Ability to observe, assess, and document unusual or suspicious activity.
• Ability to work in a behavioral health and forensic treatment environment.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and experience in corrections, security, law enforcement, military service, institutional safety, or a related field sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in a correctional, detention, behavioral health, psychiatric, hospital security, or law enforcement environment.
• Experience conducting security patrols and access control operations.
• Experience preparing reports and documenting incidents.
• Experience working with forensic or justice-involved populations.
