The Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a 4-week residential summer program for skilled, knowledgeable, and talented high school sophomores and juniors. GHP offers instruction designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders. The instruction GHP provides is legislatively required to be significantly different from what is provided in a typical classroom. Duties & Responsibilities: The counselor position is responsible for providing counseling and support services for gifted and talented high school students who are participants in the Governor’s Honors Program. The counselor position provides initial assessments, as well as individual and group counseling as needed by the program. The counselor may provide crisis intervention and on-call coverage as needed by the program.
Schedule:
● The program runs from June 13, 2027– July 10, 2027. It is a 4-Week, Summer Residential Assignment at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA (on-campus housing and dining plan are also provided)
● Counselors will provide instruction in an elective area of study Monday-Friday. Counselors must prepare unit plans and/or a syllabus and course overviews that reflect a rigorous and engaging curriculum for their elective. Counselors must be able to maintain accurate records of attendance.
● Counselors will be on a 24/7 rotational call schedule for the duration of the program.
● Counselors are required to attend a paid virtual training session for new and returning staff on Saturday, March 20th.
● Counselors are required to attend staff orientation in advance of the summer program, work collaboratively with discipline specific department staff on an ongoing basis; participate in outside-of-class activities when directed; and other assigned tasks related to the Governor’s Honors Program.
Minimum Training & Experience: The successful candidate must have either a Bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited school of social work; a Master’s degree in human services field from an accredited college or university and three years directly related experience; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and five years directly related experience. *
*Directly related experience is defined as experience in the areas of case management, assessment and referral, supportive counseling, intervention, clinical psycho-social therapy, and treatment planning.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Significant experience counseling gifted secondary learners
• Excellent organization skills
• Proven ability to provide a challenging and differentiated instructional experience to diverse learners
• Proven ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
• Ability to participate in coaching and professional growth opportunities to improve instructional practice and to support others to improve their craft
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• High level of professional integrity
