As an STI Epidemiologist 1 within the Division of Epidemiology at the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.


Job Duties and Responsibilities (overall tasks and expectations of the position):

  • Support activities that bridge STI Surveillance and Prevention by conceptualizing and developing analyses to monitor effectiveness of STD prevention activities, STI testing data, and data completeness. Present findings at stakeholder meetings.
  • Assists Senior STI Epidemiologist and CDC Field Epidemiologist with STI Surveillance activities including data collection and analysis.
  • Assist with obtaining data from various sources to conduct data matches with STI data (ex.-vital records, HIV data, etc.).
  • Assists with planning, developing and maintaining the state electronic notifiable disease surveillance system (SENDSS) to facilitate quick retrieval and manipulation of STD data.
  • Fulfill data requests with minimal supervisory support; communicate directly with requesters
  • Run provided SAS code to generate datasets and reports
  • Assist with updating annual reporting materials; present data to stakeholders
  • Develop or maintain expertise in data analysis and data visualization.
  • Assists in the implementation of appropriate quality assurance processes to maintain valid and accurate epidemiological data and reviews data for errors and initiates corrective actions. 
  • Analyzes data (using Excel, SAS, R, Tableau and/or ArcGIS) and assists in the creation of reports and summaries for internal and external audiences.
  • Provides technical assistance for local health districts and other users of STI surveillance data.
  • Performs various duties in support of section operations.

Preferred Qualifications (based on the needs of the position):

Preference will be given to applicants who in addition to meeting the entry qualifications possess 3 or more of the following:

  • Master of Public Health from an Accredited University with concentration in epidemiology 
  • Training in and experience working in SAS or R 
  • Experience with STI Surveillance
  • Experience with STI SENDSS Module
  • Experience working or interning in state or local public health departments
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Broad knowledge of principles of public health practice, especially those applicable to the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases
  • Broad knowledge of principles of public health surveillance, including electronic disease reporting and syndromic surveillance
  • Ability to effectively communicate with health care professionals, state and local officials, public health officials, and laypeople, verbally and in writing and individually or in group settings
  • Ability to coordinate and maintain effective working relationships with various internal and external customers and stakeholders.





Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience performing epidemiologic work or work in a closely related field.
