Job Summary:
The Family Literacy Specialist is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supporting West Georgia Technical College Adult Education's Family Literacy Program. This part-time (19 hour) position serves as the primary liaison connecting adult education students who are parents or guardians with opportunities to strengthen literacy within their families while advancing their own educational goals.
Working collaboratively with Adult Education faculty and community partners, the Family Literacy Specialist will develop and facilitate family literacy activities, establish parent engagement opportunities, support instructors in incorporating family literacy concepts into adult education instruction, and cultivate partnerships with community organizations that promote literacy, early childhood education, and family well-being. The position will play a key role in creating a supportive network of student parents and fostering a culture of family learning across the Adult Education program.
Essential Functions:

• Coordinate and oversee all aspects of the Adult Education Family Literacy Program including parent engagement and support, instructional support and community partnerships. (75%)
• Assist with development and implementation of family literacy materials and activities that engage adult learners and their children. (10%)
• Establish or connect an established community Parent Club for Adult Education students (5%)
• Coordinate schedules, facilities, materials, and logistics for family literacy activities, including maintaining program calendars. (5%)
• Promote participation in family literacy events, workshops, and initiatives. (5%)

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a part-time position. Weekly hours will range from 13 to 19, dependent upon instructional time, planning, professional development, and student needs. Travel:
Travel to other campuses is a possibility for meetings, trainings, professional development, etc.…
Required Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree
*and*
• Two (2) years related work experience
Note: Experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis
• Experience working with adults, families, children, education programs, or community-based organizations
Preferred Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Services, Social Work, Family Studies, Adult Education;
• Minimum three (3) years’ experience in education, or
related field;
• Experience in literacy, family engagement, adult education or community outreach programs.
• Bi-lingual
• Strong computer, communication, and interpersonal skills;
Location and Hours of Instruction
This position will be based on the Carroll Campus, 19 hours per week, Monday- Thursday. Specialist may be required to work some evening hours depending on program needs.
Rate of Pay:
$22 per hour – no benefits. Grant funded.
