POSITION:               LIBRARY ASSISTANT

REPORTS TO:         DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES

SALARY:                  Mid to Upper $30’s annually, depending on qualifications and experience

EFFECTIVE:           Position is available now       

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general and/or minimal supervision, provides circulation services (both online and in-person) for all library materials at Lanier Technical College.  Assists students and faculty (both online and in-person) with the use of the library and accessing electronic media.  Assists in document preparation, copying, filing, intra- and inner-office mailings.  Performs administrative/clerical duties and production functions.  Assists Supervisor with all duties.  Monitors the use of and maintains supplies for the library.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Public Services:

  • Under minimal supervision, responsible for daily operation and maintenance of circulation desk. 
  • Provides reference and research services to patrons (online and in-person); assists with maintenance of periodical subscriptions; assists with ordering and receipt of library materials. 
  • Maintains user records and circulation materials.
  • Answers telephones, emails, online chat inquiries, and greets visitors; provides information and assistance as needed.
  • Processes intra-library and inter-library loan requests.
  • Assists students and faculty with GALILEO access, Internet use, printing, and other projects.
  • Shelf-reads to maintain correct order on book shelves.

Administrative Support:

  • Shares circulation desk duty and monitors shelf-maintenance activities, including shelving and shelf reading
  • Processes overdue notices; places Alma/circulation system holds; finds and enters book prices for billing
  • Assists with ordering, receiving, checking-in, and routing books, supplies, equipment, and furniture.
  • Assists in the selection of materials to develop the college collection
  • Displays library materials and QR code links to E-Books, periodicals, other library materials and resources, in an orderly and neat manner.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of the library environment.
  • Repairs books.
  • Oversees serial management, including receiving, shelf maintenance, renewals, requests, claims and cancellations.
  • Processes incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Introduces patrons/staff/faculty to available software, applications, and resources.
  • Ensures that computers and other equipment are used only in accordance with established policies.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned by Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One year of work-related experience

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of library materials, methods, and organization;
  • Knowledge of the methods of classifying, cataloging, and shelf-listing books;
  • Ability to troubleshoot computers and printers in the Library;
  • Ability to learn new technologies and programs as needed;
  • Effective skill in operating a computer and job-related software programs;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (in addition to minimum qualifications & technical

competencies):

  • Prior library experience, preferably in a technical college or community college environment;
  • Postsecondary training and education from a regionally accredited college or university.

Physical Demands:

Will occasionally lift or move objects of a light to medium weight, up to 20 pounds.  Work is typically performed in an office environment with intermittent sitting, standing, or walking in various settings.  Full range of hand and finger motion may be utilized for data entry purposes.
