GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
POSITION CLARIFICATION: This is a civilian risk management, workplace safety, and loss prevention position. It is not a law enforcement, security, or protective services role.
Join the State of Georgia and help lead agencies through a transformation in adopting best practices in Risk Management. The Loss Control Officer evaluates operational risks and safety programs, analyzes loss trends, provides technical consultation, and recommends practical improvements. The role is a subject matter resource in risk management, occupational safety, insurance loss control, and loss prevention.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position develops, implements, and evaluates customer education and training programs and collaborates with the risk management leadership team to ensure that safety and loss control issues are managed consistently across programs.
- Risk Assessment: Evaluate agency operations, workplace hazards, incidents, and loss trends.
- Loss Prevention: Recommend practical controls that protect employees, property, and state resources.
- Policies and Training: Improve safety and loss control policies, programs, standards, and training.
- Consultation and Follow-Up: Advise state entities, report findings, and track recommended improvements.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of risk assessment, workplace safety, loss prevention, and loss control practices
- Ability to analyze incidents, loss information, operational exposures, and trends; evaluate programs; and recommend practical corrective actions
- Ability to develop and interpret policies, procedures, standards, and training, with strong organization and follow-through
- Strong oral and written communication, presentation, consultation, and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong people management (managing, motivating, and developing staff), decision-making, negotiation, and strategic-thinking skills
This position may require weekly travel.
Area location is predominately South Georgia territory.
Completion of a pre-employment background check is required.

MINIMUM ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Two years of related experience
OR Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Four years of related experience
OR Associate's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Five years of experience, Two years of which in a position directly related to the area of assignment
OR Two years of experience required at the lower-level Compliance Specialist 2 (RCP061) or position equivalent. Note: Some positions may require a certification or licensure.
Note: Some positions may require a valid driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following items below. PLEASE CLEARLY INDICATE THESE QUALIFICATIONS ON YOUR RESUME.
- Professional experience in risk management, occupational safety, insurance loss control or risk engineering, industrial hygiene, or workplace loss prevention
- Experience conducting workplace risk assessments, safety program evaluations, or loss control consultations and preparing written recommendations
- Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Associate Safety Professional (ASP); relevant professional association membership is also valued
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and/or Associate in Risk Management for Public Entities (ARM-P)
