Job Description:

POSITION: PART-

TIME INTERPRETER, SIGN LANGUAGE

PRIMARY LOCATION: 

College-wide (Contingent on Class Locations) 

DESCRIPTION: 

Under general supervision, provides interpreting/transliterating for deaf and hard of hearing students. Confers and plans with students, teachers and other interpreters in preparation for assignments.  Sign language interpreters facilitate the communication and integration of deaf and hard-of-hearing students (including faculty, staff and college guests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and into the college community either by way of American Sign language (ASL), or Signed English, Transliteration (a manual, oral or tactile system of communication.   

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 

Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and transliteration services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) students, faculty, and staff in classrooms and a variety of academic and institutional settings (meetings, registration, advising, testing, tutoring, counseling, etc.).  

Must have strong attention to detail, excellent listening skills, and a solid grasp of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.  

Accurately convey the meaning, intent, tone, and register of spoken and signed communication. 

Exercise independent, real-time professional judgment to determine the most effective interpreting methods based on the assignment and the communication needs of the consumer. 

Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, including standards related to confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate role boundaries. 

Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and accessibility services to ensure effective communication access. 

Adapt interpreting strategies to meet diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational needs. 

Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, terminology, and subject matter when available. 

Maintain professionalism, punctuality, and reliability for all scheduled assignments. 

Perform related duties as assigned in support of intuitional accessibility and compliance obligations  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Associate degree in American Sign Language Studies from an accredited Interpreter Training Program (ITP) is required. In lieu of the required degree, a minimum of two (2) years of documented professional experience as a sign language interpreter in a postsecondary educational setting may be substituted. Substitution of experience for the degree will be accepted on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

In addition to minimum qualifications, MUST have NIC (National Interpreter Certification) or RID Legacy Certification (CI/CT) 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS 

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license 

Maintain automobile insurance coverage; and have reliable transportation 

Willingness to travel to assignments as needed 

TIME-BASED /EMPLOYEMENT STATUS 

Hourly, intermittent, on-call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for assignments ranging from a few days up to one (1) year, depending on institutional needs. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the stated ending date. 

**** Flexible Schedule: Willingness to adjust schedules to meet student needs, which may include evenings or weekends. **** 

Physical Demands: Depending on the class or activity, the employee may be required to interpret outdoors. Depending on the class, the employee may need to provide their own PPE (personal protection equipment such as appropriate footwear and eyewear. If the class exceeds an hour and forty-five minutes, the interpreter will be provided a team interpreter.  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen.  The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to operate instructional equipment and computers.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close visions and the ability to adjust focus.  

Work Environment:  While performing the duties of this position, the employee will travel by automobile and be exposed to changing weather conditions.  The employee will be required to drive to various instructional facilities. 

salary/benefits: 

The starting salary is $35 - $50 per hour.  Actual salary will be based on the candidate’s certifying credentials. This is a part time position working up to 19.5 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits.  Georgia Defined Contributions, Social Security and taxes will be deducted. 

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent *and* Two (2) years related work experience
