Job Description:

The Georgia Department of Education is hiring a Residential Advisor for the Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon, Georgia. This position monitors students in a residential/home-life environment; observes, documents, and reports student behavior and progress; assists students in developing independent living skills; and helps maintain a clean, healthy, safe, and supportive residential setting. The Residential Advisor plays a vital role in fostering student growth, independence, and self-confidence while providing a structured and nurturing environment that supports students' academic, social, and personal development


Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise students in residential cottages during assigned shifts, including evenings and other scheduled hours.
  • Ensure the safety, security, and well-being of students at all times.
  • Establish and maintain positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with students.
  • Assist students with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, organization, and other personal needs as appropriate.
  • Support students in following daily schedules, routines, cottage expectations, and school policies.
  • Monitor student activities and provide appropriate supervision during recreational, social, educational, and community activities.
  • Assist with transportation and supervision of students during approved off-campus activities and field trips.
  • Provide guidance and support in resolving conflicts and addressing behavioral concerns in accordance with established procedures.
  • Observe, document, and report student behavior, incidents, injuries, concerns, and significant events to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, parents/guardians, and other staff regarding student needs and concerns.
  • Follow individual student plans, safety procedures, medical instructions, and directions provided by school personnel.
  • Assist with meals, snacks, and other student needs as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe residential environment.
  • Conduct required room, cottage, and student checks according to established procedures.
  • Complete required documentation, logs, reports, and other assigned records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
  • Comply with all Georgia Academy for the Blind policies, procedures, rules, and safety requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience working with children, adolescents, or young adults in a school, residential, childcare, or community setting.
  • Experience working with students who are blind, visually impaired, or have disabilities preferred.
  • Experience providing supervision, guidance, and support to students in a residential, dormitory, or group living environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for students.
  • CPR and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification upon hire.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma/GED and one (1) year of experience in a related field; or one (1) year of experience required at the lower-level Health Aide 2 (HCS021) or position equivalent.
