Job Description:

Under supervision, performs a full range of law enforcement duties to maintain safety, security, and order within a educational setting. The School Resource Officer serves as a visible law enforcement presence while fostering positive relationships with students, staff, and parents. The position is responsible for protecting students, staff, and visitors; responding to emergencies; enforcing applicable laws and agency policies; and supporting a safe learning environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform all law enforcement duties in a professional manner consistent with Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice policies and procedures.
• Pick up students from their homes. Wand students and check their temperature before they enter the van.
• Provide security screening for students entering the secure educational area through pat-down searches or other approved security procedures.
• Conduct routine patrols and walkthroughs of classrooms, hallways, and school grounds.
• Monitor student movement throughout the school day, including arrival, class transitions, lunch periods, and dismissal.
• Address disruptive behavior and intervene when necessary to maintain a safe and secure educational environment.
• Facilitate school safety drills, emergency preparedness exercises, lockdown procedures, evacuations, and other emergency response activities.
• Inspect classrooms and common areas for contraband, security breaches, or safety hazards following student movement throughout the day.
• Monitor security cameras, and other security equipment, reporting deficiencies immediately.
• Respond to emergencies, disturbances, medical incidents, and criminal activity occurring doing school.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, probation staff, and other DJJ personnel to improve student safety and behavior.
• Build positive relationships with students through mentoring, counseling, conflict resolution, and educational presentations on law enforcement-related topics.
• Maintain accurate daily logs, reports, and documentation.
• Remain physically capable of standing, walking, and responding rapidly during emergency situations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Minimum Qualifications· High school diploma or GED.
• Successful completion of Georgia Basic Law Enforcement Training.
• Current Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification or the ability to obtain certification as required by law.
• Valid Georgia driver's license.
• Preferred Qualifications
• Preference may be given to applicants who possess one or more of the following:
• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Public Administration, Sociology, Education, or a closely related field.
• Previous experience as a School Resource Officer.
• Three or more years of law enforcement experience.
• Experience working with juveniles in an educational or correctional environment.
• Strong communication, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Completion of an undergraduate degree in one of the following areas: Criminal Justice Public Administration, Sociology, or related field.
2. One or more years of experience in police or investigative work, in a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency.
3. Two or more years of experience working in a juvenile justice or human service delivery setting.

Physical Agility Standards:

This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding law enforcement activities associated with maintaining safety and security within educational settings. Candidates must be able to meet all agency-established physical agility standards and may be required to successfully complete a validated physical agility assessment before hiring and other intervals a required by agency policy.
