Job Description, Responsibilities, Standards and Qualifications
Under general supervision, provisions, administers, configures, and troubleshoots servers, networks, and computer systems, with a focus the agency’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) presence.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
AWS Infrastructure Administration
- Administer and support AWS infrastructure across development, testing, and production environments.
- Provision, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot AWS services including EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, IAM, Route 53, CloudWatch, and Systems Manager.
- Support AWS networking, including VPCs, subnets, security groups, load balancers, routing, and VPN connectivity.
- Perform routine administration, patching, and maintenance of Linux and Windows systems.
- Monitor infrastructure availability, performance, capacity, and system health.
- Assist with high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity efforts.
Security and Access Management
- Manage AWS IAM users, roles, policies, permissions, and service accounts using least privilege principles.
- Assist with resolving security vulnerabilities, configuration issues, and access-control findings.
- Review security alerts and logs and coordinate remediation with Security, Cloud Operations, and Development teams.
- Support cloud security controls including encryption, logging, network security, and access management.
- Provide system information and documentation for audits and compliance activities.
Automation and DevOps
- Automate routine infrastructure and administrative tasks.
- Use tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, AWS CLI, PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
- Support CI/CD pipelines and automated application deployments.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual work and improve operational reliability through automation.
Monitoring and Production Support
- Configure and maintain system monitoring, alerting, logging, and dashboards.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, connectivity, performance, and production issues.
- Assist with root-cause analysis and corrective actions for system incidents.
- Monitor system health and identify potential issues before they impact services.
- Participate in production support and on-call activities as required.
Backup and Maintenance
- Monitor and support AWS backup and recovery processes.
- Perform system patching, security updates, upgrades, and routine maintenance.
- Assist with disaster recovery testing and system restoration procedures.
- Maintain infrastructure inventories, procedures, configuration records, and technical documentation.
Collaboration and Operations
- Work with Development, Security, and other IT teams to resolve technical issues.
- Assist application teams with deployments, connectivity, permissions, and AWS infrastructure requirements.
- Participate in change management processes and ensure infrastructure changes are documented, tested, and approved.
- Assist with evaluating AWS services and recommending improvements to reliability, security, performance, and cost.
- Help identify underutilized or improperly sized AWS resources to support cost optimization..
- Provide technical assistance to other IT staff as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- A 2 or 4-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of AWS networking, IAM, compute, storage, database, monitoring, and security services.
- Experience administering Linux and Windows Server environments.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuraLon automaLon technologies.
- Experience with scripLng languages such as Bash and Python.
- Familiarity with containers, Docker, Amazon ECS, or Amazon EKS is preferred.
- Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and tools such as GitHub AcLons, GitLab, or AWS CodePipeline is preferred.
- Strong troubleshooLng, documentaLon, communicaLon, and problem-solving skills.
